Artagel of Domme?
Hi. I'm Traci. First of all, that picture is gorgeous. Second, have you read the Mordant's Need series by Stephen R. Donaldson, by any chance? :) There, it is spelled Domne (w/an n), but it was so close, so I had to ask.

Allo Traci! This is one of the shots I saw on Flickr that was extrordinary. Many of my favs on flickr (User BenODen) are along the same vein; You're more than welcome to surf on by here. (I just noted that there were more kitty shots than some people's tastes, but they're the above average ones at that...) My aerials have some of the same vibe too.

I'm curious, how'd you run across my journal? It's WAY out in the backwaters of the blogosphere! *grin*

I was searching for the meaning of the name Artagel (after reading Donaldson's books). I thought it was a beautiful name, but I'd never heard of it before. After exhaustive searching, I found that Donaldson apparently made it up. There's nothing online under "Artagel" except your journal and a few other obscure blogs. :)

I've also enjoyed Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (books 1-6), Daughter of Regals and Other Tales (short stories), Reave the Just (short stories), and I am 3.5 books into The Gap series (5 books). He's my favorite author.

Yep! He's one of my favorite authors too. I've read Thomas Covenant books (1-6, need a copy of #7) 3 or 4 times as well. I haven't read Regals and Reave as often, but I did enjoy them quite a bit as well, just a matter of time. Now, the GAP series. Wow those are dark books. I gave up after finishing the second book. There was just too little hope in them. At least in his other series there were people fighting to hold on to hope.

We should totally talk about these some more, I run into only a few people who have liked the books, but you're the first I've run into on the net who's liked them as much as I did. Kinda says the nets a pretty big place, with us fans knocking about like superballs in a gymnasium..

How about other books, like "Battlefield Earth" (the only book I like a lot by L Ron Hubbard) or "Enders Game" (Orson Scott Card) or the classics like Asimov or Clarke or Niven? You like some of those?

I'm actually new to the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I used to read horror novels (eg. Stephen King, Thomas Tryon, etc.), which might explain why I don't mind the darker of Donaldson's books. They do tend to get to people though. I tell my friends to start with Mordant or Covenant if they are going to read Donaldson, since the short stories and The Gap would freak people out. :-P I would describe The Gap series like a horrible car accident. It is so horrific that it makes you uncomfortable, but you can't stop looking b/c you really want to know what happened.

I got into fantasy b/c of Harry Potter (who hasn't?!), and when I was done with those I asked my stepfather for a recommendation. He suggested Covenant. I loved them, read them several times, and then found everything I could written by Donaldson. I still don't have Covenant book 7.

One of the only other fantasy novels I've read is Giants of the Frost. It is centered on Norse Mythology.

I bought a copy of Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World, but I have been waiting to finish The Gap before I move on to that one.

One thing I have to say about Donaldson, though, is that I love the theory behind his inventions. It almost makes them sound plausible, which is interesting, since I am a graduate student working on my Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry. :D

Yes indeed. A car wreck. Great description for the Gap books. *grin* I like some horror. I've read 4 or 5 Dean Koontz books, with my favorite so far being Intensity. Not sure why, because that certainly is a hugely dark book of kidnapping. I guess she never gives up hope there either, doesn't succumb to the darkness for long.

I agree, Donaldson has simple, yet compelling changes to the universe that change everything. "Earthpower" and Mirrors would be cool to find someplace out there, where wow, the laws of physics have subtly changed! On top of that I really like his character developments. Even though Covenant is a stubborn jerk at times, he has character and refuses to just give up. What's your favorite book in the Covenant Series? For me it's hard to separate out, but One Tree is way up there, with the journeys to strange lands. I don't think I could deal with the movies made from these books though.

Oh, I've another author for you to add to your already too long list. Dan Simmons. (I know, it'll take you years to do a PHD and finish the wheel of time already! LOL Somehow I never got into that series, despite owning the first book.) Simmons wrote a four book series set in the future when mankind had spread to the stars. Featuring prominently is a fearsome and mysterious robot/beast the Shrike and also the struggle to alter the course of events that threaten humankind if left unaltered. Simmons has great story telling, and as the stories unfold, fundamental understandings of the universe ebb and shift, though never as definitively as in the Covenant or Mirrors worlds, since a lot of the book is the spinning and unraveling of the mysterious lives of the characters and the import of their actions. Highly recommended.
